From Carol...
I wish to acknowledge the 35 years I was on the faculty of the T. Schreiber Studio, beginning with Terry’s last year at the Washington Square studio before the move to East Fourth Street. The years of extraordinary people and creative opportunities fill my heart, as does Terry Schreiber’s dedicated support of my work.
Working with master teacher Caymichael Patten and her students, beginning early 21st century until 2020, was a joy and a privilege.
These long and fulfilling associations were preceded by work with the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Michael Howard Studio, New Actors Workshop, Gene Frankel, and Total Theatre Lab – all in all, a gift allowing me to develop my unique way of teaching movement, which continues today in my private practice.
THE REYNOLDS TECHNIQUE takes on the body's muscular defense system, in an organized, practical approach to physical and emotional awareness. Chronic tensions are released, and structural support and flexibility are developed through a progression of individual, partner, and group exercises.
These exercises tap into muscle memory and provide an opportunity to discover how we have built defenses into our physicality which may no longer be serving us. The work is transformative and empowers students to develop “presence.”
The class work promotes the flow of energy throughout the body, greater efficiency of movement, and a more direct connection between feelings, thoughts, and physical expression. It alleviates unconscious habits and behaviors that can potentially cause injury and functional deterioration.
CAROL REYNOLDS (founder, director) based Body Dynamics on her training in Bioenergetic Analysis with Alexander Lowen and John Pierrakos. The origins of this practice grew out of her work as a dancer, choreographer (see the short film Pentimento) and casting agent, and has evolved for over 40 years in the context of dance and theatre training programs.
While the course was originally designed for performing artists, the scope has since broadened. Practitioners include CEOs, architects, social workers, bartenders, journalists, film-makers, etc. The class work is designed to free the body to be available to its full range of expression, in work and in life. The approach is non-invasive, and certified teachers establish a caring environment with clear boundaries.
The Body Dynamics curriculum draws from many different modalities including Feldenkrais, Cranial-Sacral, Pilates, physical therapy, Alexander Technique, chua ka, yoga, and Klein Technique, among others.
